इस अध्याय में हड़प्पा सभ्यता (लगभग 2600-1900 ईसा पूर्व) के विभिन्न पहलुओं का वर्णन किया गया है। यह सभ्यता अपनी विशिष्ट पुरावस्तुओं, जैसे मुहरों, मनकों, बाटों तथा पकी हुई ईंटों के लिए जानी जाती है। मोहनजोदड़ो जैसे शहरी केंद्र नियोजित थे, जो दुर्ग और निचले शहर में बँटे थे। यहाँ सड़कें और नालियाँ ‘ग्रिड’ पद्धति में बनी थीं, तथा विशाल स्नानागार जैसी सार्वजनिक संरचनाएँ थीं।

निर्वाह के तरीकों में गेहूँ, जौ जैसे अनाज और पालतू तथा जंगली जानवरों का मांस शामिल था। कृषि के लिए हल (बैल) और सिंचाई का प्रयोग होता था। सामाजिक भिन्नताओं का अवलोकन शवाधानों तथा ‘विलासिता’ की वस्तुओं से किया गया। चन्हुदड़ो जैसे केंद्र शिल्प-उत्पादन में संलग्न थे, जिसके लिए कच्चा माल सुदूर क्षेत्रों (जैसे ओमान, मेसोपोटामिया) से प्राप्त किया जाता था।

लंबी दूरी के संपर्क में मुहरों का उपयोग होता था, जबकि लिपि अभी तक पढ़ी नहीं जा सकी है। सभ्यता का अंत लगभग 1800 ईसा पूर्व के आसपास हुआ, जिसके कारणों में जलवायु परिवर्तन और वनों की कटाई शामिल हैं। पुरातत्वविदों ने पुरावस्तुओं के माध्यम से इस इतिहास का पुनर्निर्माण किया।
