❤️ 1. My Mother

The document contains the first lesson of an English textbook titled ‘MY MOTHER’, which is a poem written by Ann Taylor. The poem beautifully describes the selfless love and care a mother provides to her child from infancy through illness and early life.

It highlights how she watches over the child in the cradle, sheds tears of affection, and runs to help whenever the child falls. The poet expresses deep gratitude, questioning how one could ever be unkind to someone who has been so devoted.

The poem concludes with a promise that as the mother grows old and feeble, the child will be her support and soothe her pains, reciprocating the care received. The text includes a ‘Warmer’ section to engage students, a glossary for difficult words with Hindi meanings, and various comprehension exercises such as ‘Think and Tell’ and ‘Think and Write’ to test understanding and encourage personal reflection.

The material is copyright-protected by BSTBPC, Government of Bihar, and Abdiel Solutions, indicating its use in the Bihar state school curriculum for empowering students with language skills.

❤️ 2. The Boy who lost his Appetite

The story follows Sham, a wealthy young man who inherits his father’s estate and begins living a life of luxury and laziness. Spending his days eating rich food and staying in bed, he soon finds that all food has become tasteless to him.

One day, he joins a hunt but, being unaccustomed to the activity, gets separated from his group and wanders lost in the woods for hours. Exhausted and genuinely hungry for the first time in months, he finds a peasant’s hut.

The peasant offers him simple roti and dal, which Sham finds incredibly delicious?better than any of his expensive meals. He returns home but soon finds his rich food tasteless again, leading him to realize that the simple meal was only tasty because he was truly hungry and active.

The story teaches the lesson that the enjoyment of food and life comes from hard work and physical activity rather than idle luxury. Hunger is indeed the best sauce, as the simple peasant food outshone the finest delicacies when earned through effort and physical exhaustion.

❤️ 4. Do Animals Share Ideas

The book chapter titled ‘DO ANIMALS SHARE IDEAS?’ explores the fascinating ways in which animals communicate and express their feelings despite lacking a structured language like humans. It highlights that while animals do not use complex sentences, they successfully share information through various biological and behavioral mechanisms.

One primary method mentioned is the sense of smell; many animals leave scents to frighten enemies or attract partners from great distances. Additionally, sound plays a crucial role in conveying emotions such as fear or providing warnings to others.

Body posture is another vital communication tool, where actions like raising hair or baring teeth serve to intimidate threats, while coming close together signifies friendship. The text concludes by contrasting these animal behaviors with human language, emphasizing that human communication is uniquely complex due to its ability to produce infinite sentences and construct entirely new ideas.

The chapter includes a glossary, comprehension exercises, and grammar lessons focused on prepositions to reinforce the learning of these concepts.

❤️ 5. Bangle Sellers

The poem ‘Bangle-Sellers’, composed by Sarojini Naidu, portrays the life and trade of those who sell bangles at temple fairs. Describing bangles as ‘delicate, bright, rainbow-tinted circles of light,’ the poet emphasizes their role as ‘lustrous tokens of radiant lives’ for happy daughters and wives.

The poem vividly details various bangles suited for different stages of a woman’s life. Some are silver and blue, reminiscent of mountain mist, and are meant for maidens.

Others are flushed like dream-filled buds or aglow like new-born leaves, symbolizing the beauty and freshness of youth. The text serves as an educational lesson, including a glossary that translates key terms like ‘lustrous’ and ‘tranquil’ into Hindi, along with comprehension exercises and language games.

Through these descriptions, Naidu captures the cultural significance of bangles in Indian society, linking their colors and shine to the emotions and milestones of the women who wear them. The lesson further explores word power through color comparisons and identifies various types of sellers, such as those of vegetables or sweets, to broaden students’ vocabulary and understanding of their surroundings.

Historically, this art form was primarily used to decorate village house walls, but over the last 50-60 years, it has transitioned onto various bases like paper, cloth, wood, and pottery.

❤️ 9. Discrimination

The book titled ‘Discrimination’ is a poetic and educational exploration of the pain caused by social biases. The central poem, written by Janet S. Watford, captures the raw emotions of a person facing prejudice while walking through a hall.

The speaker describes being surrounded by ‘snickers, sneers, and laughter’ simply for being different, highlighting the isolating nature of being shunned and taunted. This work emphasizes the fundamental equality of all people and questions the logic of discrimination based on religion, caste, gender, or nationality. It poignantly asks why, if we are all part of one nation, some people continue to treat others as inferior.

Following the poem, the text includes a comprehensive glossary to help students understand terms like ‘taunt’ and ‘shun,’ along with comprehension questions that encourage critical thinking about the impact of untouchability and bias. By framing untouchability as a ‘crime against humanity,’ the book advocates for a world where everyone lives in harmony, free from the hurt of unfair treatment. Ultimately, the book serves as a powerful call to empathy, urging readers to recognize the shared humanity that unites us all regardless of our outward differences.

❤️ 10. Bamboo Curry

The story ‘Bamboo Curry’ is a humorous Santhal folk tale that explores themes of literal-mindedness and cultural misunderstanding. It begins with a Santhal bridegroom visiting his mother-in-law, who serves him a delicious curry. When he asks about the dish, she points to a bamboo door.

Taking this literally, the bridegroom removes the door and carries it home to his village, intending to have his wife recreate the meal. Despite his wife’s efforts to chop and boil the hard wood of the door repeatedly, the dish remains inedible. The situation reaches a comical climax when his in-laws visit and reveal his foolish mistake: the curry was actually made from tender bamboo shoots, not the wood of a door.

The lesson is structured for educational purposes, including a glossary with Hindi meanings for words like ‘bridegroom’ (??????) and ‘delicious’ (?????????), followed by comprehension questions and grammar exercises on direct and indirect speech. It concludes by encouraging students to share recipes and translate sentences related to food, such as ‘???????? ?????

???? ???? ???’ (What is your favorite food?), making it an engaging piece of literature for language learning.

❤️ 11. Akbar and Birbal

The book or lesson titled ‘AKBAR AND BIRBAL’ tells a fascinating story centered on the legendary Mughal Emperor Akbar and his exceptionally wise minister, Birbal. Akbar, although illiterate, surrounded himself with intellectual brilliance in his court, most notably the ‘Nav Ratna’ or nine jewels, of which Birbal was a prominent member. The narrative follows a challenge posed by a learned Pandit who visits the court, claiming mastery over numerous languages.

He boasts that no one can identify his true mother tongue and challenges the courtiers to do so. While everyone else fails, Birbal takes up the task. That night, Birbal quietly enters the Pandit’s room and tickles his ear with dry grass while he is asleep.

In his startled state, the Pandit cries out in his mother tongue, Telugu. The following day, Birbal correctly identifies the language, explaining to the court that a person in distress or caught off-guard will instinctively speak their native tongue. Impressed by Birbal’s cleverness and timely wisdom, Akbar praises him, and the Pandit concedes defeat.

This story highlights the quick thinking and deep understanding of human nature that made Birbal a beloved figure in Indian folklore.

❤️ 12. The Talking Potato

The story ‘The Talking Potato’ is a humorous folk tale about a lazy farmer who discovers that inanimate objects in his world can speak. It begins when the farmer goes to dig up potatoes he had neglected.

To his shock, a potato complains about his lack of care, and his dog agrees. Terrified, the farmer tries to tie the dog with a vine, but the vine and even a rock start talking to him.

As he flees to the village, he encounters a fisherman and a tailor. Despite their initial skepticism, their own possessions?a fishing net and a shirt?join the conversation, causing everyone to run in fear to the village headman, the Mukhiya.

The Mukhiya dismisses their claims as nonsense and threatens punishment for their ‘fools’ talk.’ However, the irony peaks in the final moment when, after the men leave, the Mukhiya’s own chair speaks up in disbelief about a talking potato. The story uses these absurd interactions to highlight themes of responsibility and the unexpected, while providing an entertaining narrative that questions what we consider ‘impossible.’

❤️ 13. Laughing Song

‘Laughing Song’ is a cheerful poem by William Blake that celebrates the beauty and joy of nature. The poem uses personification to describe how various elements of the natural world?such as the green woods, dimpling streams, air, green hills, meadows, and even grasshoppers?participate in a collective sense of happiness and laughter.

The poet depicts a vibrant scene where the environment itself seems to be alive with ‘merry wit’ and ‘the voice of joy.’ Amidst this lively backdrop, three girls?Mary, Susan, and Emily?are shown singing a sweet chorus of ‘ha, ha, he’ with their ‘sweet round mouths.’ The imagery extends to painted birds laughing in the shade near a table spread with cherries and nuts. The poem concludes with an invitation from the speaker for others to live, be merry, and join in the harmonious singing.

It highlights the theme of innocence and the deep connection between human happiness and the exuberant spirit of the natural world, suggesting that joy is a universal language shared by all creation.

❤️ 15. Excuses, Execuses?

This text presents a humorous poem titled ‘EXCUSES, EXCUSES!’ by Gareth Owen, which depicts a dialogue between a teacher and a student named Blenkinsopp. The student is notorious for arriving late and being absent, offering a series of increasingly improbable excuses to avoid his responsibilities.

Blenkinsopp claims his grandmother’s death is the reason for his lateness, despite the teacher noting that this would be the fourth grandmother he has lost in a single term, curiously always on Physical Education (P.E.) days. When questioned about his absence during a math test, he blames a toothache, and he later refuses to participate in P.E.

because his kit is at home. He claims his grandmother usually handles his kit, but since she is ‘dead’, he could not bring it.

The book includes comprehension questions, vocabulary exercises, and grammar lessons on punctuation, such as commas and inverted commas. It serves as an educational tool to engage students through a relatable scenario of school excuses while teaching language skills like translation and formal letter writing.
